I enclose copy of a memorandum addressed by this Legation to the Wai Chiao Pu, the sense of which is self explanatory. I suppose you will be sonsulted at some stage of the affair, and we hope you will see your way to using your influence towards the end desired, namely, that the office of the Chinese Telegraph Administration at Hongkong be temporarily placed in the charge of the local Superintendent of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company until the political situation between Canton and Peking has been to some extent cleared up. If you desire any further information on the subject, I shall be pleased to furnish it to the best of my ability.
